I can see that. However here is my personal experience:
I rigged up something similar to what you describe including the 470
ohm resistor. For some reason it didn`t work to reset the oil service
light on my E30. A bit frustrated I just shorted the two pins with the
banana-end cable and repeated the procedure, and it worked! I can`t
understand what happened as I had checked the rigged cable with the
resistor, etc

Generally an oil change is indicated when you don`t get any more green bars.
There is also a maximum time between changes for very low mileage drivers.
Considering the nice car you have, I would just get the oil changed even if
they don`t pay for it. Always a good idea to be on the cautious side. Then
you can follow the indicated service intervals.
