If they have one they should know how and when to use it.
However, your driver`s handbook explains the meanings of the service
indicator.

Here`s a follow up question not covered by my manual:
I have a 1998 528i (E39, M52). Its service indicator system indicates
oil changes every 7,000 to 8,000 miles. When the M52 engine went to
synthetic oil as factory fill in 1999, the oil service intervals were
lengthened to roughly, 15k to 17k as John Carrier noted. I assume
that this means that Inspection I and II come less frequently on newer
BMWs. Is this correct? I`ve not owned my 528i long enough to know
this for certain. My Bentley manuals say that I can use the 1999+
synthetic oil and long life spark plugs in this car with no problem.
If so, can I extend the Inspection I and II intervals to match those
of a 1999 car? I have the reset tool. Thanks to all in advance!
