Why would anyone do that? He should probably also grab a good ground

on the frame, and put his tongue on the coil. Have a tape measure

ready to see if he goes farther than the oil did.

Hi

apologies for the real long post but it is relevant. kind of. contextual,

you might say.

I got a 1989 e34, 5301 se auto with gas conversion. I posted a couple of

times before and the group has come up with some great advice each time.

so here`s the thing. thing is, i love my ride. it`s kind of rough looking

and a bit old and every now then it gets a little sick but i still like it a

lot. I spent a small fortune already: axle bushes, joints on the front, pair

of shocks, a spot of welding here and there, a couple of new door mirrors,

new battery, set of leather seats (old ones were shot and were giving me

back ache every time i stepped out of the thing). a few weeks ago the

exhaust dropped off. then the air flow meter went and popped its lid. then

the rad burst. then i cracked the thermostat housing while trying to get

ready for winter, then the coolant sensor stopped working. And now, the

brake linings warning comes on as does the good old `brake light circuit`

warning but i checked and the pads seem fine (the wire from the sensor`s

been snipped by some wise arse before i bought it). Oh yeah, and i`ve still

to get the engine serviced - not even changed the oil, yet. In case you`re

wondering - I`m not looking for sympathy: I can and do choose to live with

my car. I love my car. It`s a great car even though the damend thing likes

the mechanics more than it likes me.

Thing is, i got this one issue that really bugs the hell out of me. Might

seem minor in the scheme of things but it`s still annoying. the interior has

this smell of oil/burning oil. Now i cleaned and valeted the thing with all

sorts of perfumes and detergents but the stink`s still there. Just the other

day, i noticed the smell gets worse when i turn the heaters on. so, i`m

thinking, the stench is coming from the engine bay, right? there is a fair

bit of oil splattered about here and there but i`m wondering whether it`s

worth steam cleaning the thing and also looking for `holes` (ungrommeted or

otherwise) in the bulkhead? Knowing my luck, steam cleaning will probably

kill the engine! Still, be nice if i can get any thoughts from some of you

folks.

once again, sorry for the excruciatingly long post. consider it my very own

form of cathartic therapy...
