I have had a similar problem with a, `87 VW Golf. Turned out to be oil
seeping out from the valve cover gasket and dripping down onto the
exhaust manifold. Enough of the fumes were brought in by the ventilation
system that I could smell it inside the cabin. I replaced the valve
cover gasket, as it was time to do so, but just tightening up the bolts
would probably have fixed the problem.

Yeah, I almost didn`t make it far enough down your post to find out what
the issue was :-)

E36 323i Sport Touring automatic 1999 M52 (alusil) engine. No top ups needed
between services at all and I *do* use the revs too. I use Millers or
Halfords own fully synthetic 5W50.
