There`s a low oil level warning light and a low oil pressure warning
light. You`re referring to the latter and you`re pretty much screwed
if that comes on anyway.
I know people who don`t even know how to open their hoods/bonnets.

Usually by the time that light comes on, it`s too late. Most of the
pressure switches don`t activate until <10psi, and if you`re at high
revs, that`s just not enough to protect your big end bearings.
Even if the car still sounds fine after a top up, you`ve probably put
several thousand miles of wear onto the bearings in those few seconds.
I`ve even had cars that have run a bearing, and I`ve pulled over
because I`ve heard the noise, and only then has the light come on!
Never trust a light... The dipstick is your friend! Plus a dipstick
will also tell you if you have any water getting into the oil etc etc,
and sticking your head under the bonnet might help you spot all manner
of faults that might come and get you in the future. Oh, and find the
neighbours missing cat!
